Established over six decades ago in the early 1950s, the Department of Dermatology Venerology at West China Hospital, affiliated with Sichuan University, is a regional beacon for comprehensive diagnosis and treatment of complex skin diseases across western China. Renowned as a National Health Commission's state clinical key specialty under construction, this department represents one of the leading platforms in southwestern China for clinical practice, research, education, and talent development in dermatology.
The distinguished team boasts 33 medical professionals including seven senior physicians, seven professors, and seven associate professors. This faculty is integral to various leadership roles in both Chinese Dermatologist Venerologist Society of Chinese Medical Doctor Association and the Chinese Society of Dermatology.

The Medical Cosmetology Cosmetics sub-specialty has made significant strides in understanding skin aging and disfiguring diseases. It excels in clinical evaluations of cosmetic safety and efficacy, and treatments for skin conditions induced by cosmetics. The department has pioneered the establishment of the first-ever Skin Biology Engineering Laboratory and Cosmetic Engineering Technology Research Center in China.
Focused on allergies, inflammatory skin disorders, psoriasis, autoimmune bullous diseases, and autoimmune connective tissue diseases, this sub-specialty is equipped with advanced platforms for flow cytometry, immunofluorescence, real-time PCR, Western blotting, immunohistochemistry, among others. This comprehensive setup allows in-depth investigation into the underlying mechanisms of skin diseases.
Notably, pioneering work was conducted on treating infantile hemangioma with itraconazole - proving it as a safe and affordable alternative for vascular hyperplasia treatment worldwide. The department has built an evidence-based dermatoscopy-centered platform for dermatological fungal, bacterial, and viral infections that includes treatment, education, research, and innovation.
With the position as the vice leader in pathology within the Chinese Society of Dermatology, this sub-specialty offers the direct immunofluorescence diagnostic service across all of Sichuan province. It not only conducts clinicopathological studies on skin lymphoproliferative diseases but also delves into molecular biology research for their pathogenesis and early detection.
The Genodermatosis team has made groundbreaking discoveries in China, including the identification of mutations in genes causing acrodermatitis enteropathica, autosomal recessive hyper-IgE syndrome DOCK8 mutations, NIPAL4-induced non-bullous congenital erythroderma, and DSG1 mutation-related non-epidermolytic palmoplantar keratoderma.
Offering over 10,000 surgeries annually including detl suture techniques over 3,000, nl operations approximately 300, and hr transplant procedures more than 150. The sub-specialty's excellence in detl suturing, hr transplantation, nl surgery, and treatment of nl diseases is recognized nationwide. Its faculty frequently presents at global forums including the World Congress of Dermatology, the International Society for Dermatologic and Aesthetic Surgery, Chinese Society of Dermatology annual meetings, and China Dermatologist Association.
This department serves as a beacon of excellence in dermatological care and research, offering innovative solutions to address skin health challenges while contributing significantly to scientific advancements in the field.
