The Department of Dermatology Venerology at West China Hospital, a distinguished part of Sichuan University, was established in the early 1950s and boasts more than six decades of experience. This department is recognized as a regional leader for the diagnosis and treatment of complex skin diseases across Western China. As one of the state key clinical specialties under construction by the National Health Commission, it acts as an essential center for clinical practice, research, education, talent development in southwestern China.

The Department comprises 33 dedicated professionals, including 7 senior specialists, 7 professors, and 7 associate professors. It holds prominent roles within the Chinese Dermatologist Venerologist Society of the Chinese Medical Doctor Association, including serving as the deputy chr organization. A significant number of its members hold high-ranking positions in both national societies.
Facilities and Specialties
The Department is home to four Ph.D.M.D. supervisors and ten master tutors, specializing across six sub-fields: medical cosmetology and cosmetics, skin-associated immune diseases, fungal infectious dermatological diseases, clinicopathological study of skin tumors, genetic skin diseases, and dermatologic surgery.
It operates several disease-focused teams such as the nl care team, hr disease team, and rare disease group. The Department boasts a skilled teaching staff that annually trns about 20 candidates for Ph.D. or master degrees.
Notable Achievements
Medical Cosmetology Cosmetics: This sub-specialty has made substantial contributions to the study of skin aging, disfiguring diseases, cosmetic safety and efficacy evaluation, and the diagnosis and treatment of skin problems caused by cosmetics.
Skin-Associated Immune Diseases: The team focuses on allergy, inflammatory skin disorders, psoriasis, autoimmune bullous diseases, and autoimmune connective tissue diseases. They have established advanced platforms for flow cytometry, immunofluorescence, real-time quantitative PCR, immunoblotting, immunohistochemistry.
Fungal Infectious Skin Disease: The first case of infantile hemangioma treated with itraconazole demonstrated its efficacy in vascular hyperplasia treatment. They have pioneered a dermatoscopy-centered platform for fungal, bacterial and viral skin disease diagnosis and treatment education and research innovation.
Genetic Skin Diseases: This group was pioneering in reporting SLC39A4 mutations in patients with acrodermatitis enteropathica, autosomal recessive hyper-IgE syndrome associated with DOCK8 mutations, NIPAL4 mutation related to non-bullous congenital ichthyosiform erythroderma, and DSG1 mutation resulting in non-epidermolytic palmoplantar keratoderma.
Dermatologic Surgery: This sub-specialty performs over 10,000 surgeries annually, including more than 3,000 meticulous suturing procedures, around 300 nl operations and over 150 hr transplant operations. Its detl suture technique, hr transplantation, nl surgery, and treatment of nl diseases are recognized as among the best worldwide.

Members of this Department frequently publish in prestigious journals such as Journal of the American Academy of Dermatology JAAD and British Journal of Dermatology BJD. Several papers have been featured as cover images in BJD, highlighting their contributions to dermatology research and global recognition.
