Established in the early 1950s and boasting a history spanning over six decades, the Department of Dermatology Venerology at West China Hospital, affiliated with Sichuan University, is a regional leader in the diagnosis and management of complex dermatological conditions in Western China. This department holds the esteemed position as a state-level key specialty under construction by the National Health Commission of China, serving as one of the most pivotal bases for clinical practice, research, education, and talent development in the southwestern region.

National Recognition:

As acknowledged by Fudan University's Hospital Management Institute a renowned statistical authority, our department has consistently ranked among the top 10 best dermatology specialties in China over the past four years 2015-2018.

Expert Faculty and Leadership Roles:

Our team comprises thirty-three dedicated professionals, including seven senior experts, seven professors, and seven associate professors. The department is also prominently represented by many of our members serving as vice chrpersons, standing committee members, board members, leading figures, among other significant roles in both the Chinese Society for Dermatology and the Dermatologist Venerologist Society within the Chinese Medical Doctor Association.

Specialized Subspecialties:

With six core subspecialties - medical cosmetology, skin-associated immune diseases, fungal and infectious dermatological disorders, clinicopathological study of skin tumors, genetic skin diseases, and dermatologic surgery - we are well-equipped to handle a broad spectrum of conditions.

Advanced Medical Teams:

Education and Trning:

Over the years, our department has fostered a robust teaching culture, offering opportunities to about twenty Ph.D. or master’s candidates annually who graduate successfully.

Specializations:

• Medical Cosmetology Cosmetics: We conduct significant research on the pathogenesis, diagnostics, and evaluation of skin aging and disfigurement diseases. Our team pioneered China's first and only Skin Biology Engineering Laboratory and Cosmetic Engineering Technology Research Center, setting new standards for cosmetic safety assessments and treatment of diseases caused by cosmetics.

• Skin-associated Immune Diseases: Our focus is on allergy studies, inflammatory dermatological conditions, psoriasis, autoimmune bullous diseases, and autoimmune connective tissue disorders. We have advanced platforms including flow cytometry, immunofluorescence, real-time fluorescence quantitative PCR, immunoblotting, and immunohistochemistry for comprehensive diagnostic capabilities.

• Fungal Infectious Dermatological Disorders: We are known internationally for groundbreaking research, notably our pioneering treatment of infantile hemangioma with itraconazole. We offer evidence-based dermatoscopy-centered platforms for diagnosis and treatment across fungal, bacterial, and viral infections.

• Clinicopathological Study of Skin Tumors: As part of the Chinese Society of Dermatology's pathology unit leadership team, we conduct direct immunofluorescence diagnostics for skin bullous diseases throughout Sichuan province. Our specialization exts beyond clinicopathological research to include molecular biology studies on the pathogenesis and early diagnosis.

• Genetic Skin Diseases: We are pioneers in identifying genetic mutations underlying various dermatological conditions such as acrodermatitis enteropathica, autosomal recessive hyper-IgE syndrome, non-bullous congenital ichthyosiform erythroderma, and non-epidermolytic palmoplantar keratoderma.

• Dermatologic Surgery: With an annual performance of over 10,000 surgical procedures including more than 3,000 with meticulous suturing techniques, around 300 dermatological surgeries in our portfolio are performed by our leading experts. We have represented the department globally at prestigious forums like the World Congress of Dermatology and the International Society for Dermatologic and Aesthetic Surgery.
