The Department of Dermatology Venerology at West China Hospital, Sichuan University, established in the early 1950s with over six decades of history, is recognized as a regional center for standardized diagnosis and treatment of complex dermatological conditions within Western China. It boasts being one of the nation's key clinical specialties by the National Health Commission, serving as an essential hub for clinical practice, research, education, and talent development in southwestern China.

The department houses 33 medical professionals, among whom are seven senior experts, seven professors, and seven associate professors. This team serves as the vice-chr organization of the Chinese Dermatologist Venerologist Society within the Chinese Medical Doctor Association, with several members occupying significant positions such as vice chrmen, committee members, and leaders in the Chinese Society of Dermatology and the Chinese Dermatologist Venerologist Society.

With three Ph.D.M.D. supervisors and ten master's tutors, the department is equipped to provide a wide range of sub-specialties including medical cosmetology and cosmetics, skin-associated immune diseases, fungal and infectious dermatological disorders, clinicopathological study on skin tumors, genetic skin diseases, and dermatological surgery. The team has established specialized groups for conditions such as nl disease teams and rare skin disease groups.

For many years, the department has fostered a group of instructors with significant clinical experience. Around 20 candidates graduate annually with either Ph.D. or master's degrees.

The medical cosmetology sub-specialty has made substantial progress in understanding the pathogenesis, diagnosis, and evaluation of aging and disfiguring skin conditions as well as skin disorders caused by cosmetics. It established China's first and only skin biology engineering laboratory and cosmetic engineering technology research center.

The sub-specialty focusing on skin-associated immune diseases is dedicated to research in allergy, inflammatory skin diseases, psoriasis, autoimmune bullous diseases, and autoimmune connective tissue diseases. Advanced platforms have been technologies such as flow cytometry, immunofluorescence, real-time fluorescence quantitative PCR, immunoblotting, immunohistochemistry, which facilitate its work.

The fungal and infectious skin disease sub-specialty is known for pioneering the use of itraconazole in treating infantile hemangioma. The team also developed a dermatoscopy-centered platform that integrates treatment, education, research, and innovation into their work, having contributed numerous publications to international journals such as Journal of the American Academy of Dermatology JAAD and British Journal of Dermatology BJD, with several cover images in BJD.

The clinicopathological study on skin tumors benefits from its role as a vice leader of the pathology unit for Chinese Dermatology. This sub-specialty conducts immunofluorescence diagnostics for skin bullous diseases throughout Sichuan Province, not only focusing on clinicopathological studies of skin lymphoproliferative diseases but also conducting molecular biology research into their pathogenesis and early diagnosis.

The genetic skin disease sub-specialty was the first in China to report mutations of SLC39A4 related to acrodermatitis enteropathica, DOCK8 mutations associated with autosomal recessive hyper-IgE syndrome, NIPAL4 mutations leading to non-bullous congenital erythroderma, and DSG1 mutation results in non-epidermolytic palmoplantar keratoderma.

The dermatological surgery sub-specialty performs over 10,000 surgeries annually. It excels at detl suture techniques with more than 3,000 operations performed each year, including around 300 nl operations and over 150 hr transplant procedures. These detls are part of the nationwide excellence in surgery practices such as detl suture technique, hr transplantation, nl surgery, and nl disease treatment.

The doctors from this sub-specialty have been invited to speak at international conferences like the World Congress of Dermatology, International Society for Dermatologic and Aesthetic Surgery, Chinese Society of Dermatology Annual Meeting, and China Dermatologist Association Annual Meetings.
