Dermatology Venerology Department of West China Hospital, Sichuan University

Established in the early 1950s, the Dermatology Venerology Department at West China Hospital, part of Sichuan University, boasts a rich history spanning over six decades. This regional center for the standardized diagnosis and treatment of complex skin diseases in Western China is recognized as a state clinical key specialty under construction by the National Health Commission. The department stands out as one of the most prominent centers for clinical practice, research, education, and talent development in southwestern China.

The department boasts an esteemed faculty comprising 33 medical professionals, among whom are seven senior experts, seven professors, and seven associate professors. It is affiliated with the Deputy Chr organizations of both Chinese Dermatology Venerology Society under the Chinese Medical Doctor Association and plays a significant role in national dermatological forums. Many of its members hold prominent positions as vice chrpersons, standing committee members, or key contributors within the Chinese Society of Dermatology and the Chinese Dermatologist Venerologist Society.

With four Ph.D.M.D. supervisors and ten master's instructors, this department encompasses six specialized sub-disciplines including medical cosmetology, skin-associated immune diseases, fungal and infectious dermatological conditions, clinicopathological studies on skin tumors, genetic skin diseases, and dermatologic surgery. The team is distinguished by of several disease-focused medical groups like the Onychosis Team and Hr Disease Team.

Over years of teaching experience, the department has cultivated a talented group of instructors who have graduated approximately 20 candidates for Ph.D.s or master's degrees annually.

Medical Cosmetology Cosmetic Dermatology: This sub-discipline has made substantial contributions to understanding skin aging and disfiguring diseases. It is recognized as leading the field in clinical safety assessments, efficacy evaluations on cosmetics, and treatments of dermatological conditions triggered by cosmetic use. The team established China's first and only Skin Biology Engineering Laboratory and Cosmetic Engineering Technology Research Center.

Skin-Associated Immune Diseases: Specializing in allergies, inflammatory skin diseases, psoriasis, autoimmune bullous diseases, autoimmune connective tissue disorders, this sub-discipline has set up a series of advanced platforms including flow cytometry, immunofluorescence techniques, real-time PCR, immunoblotting, and others.

Fungal Infectious Dermatological Conditions: The pioneering use of itraconazole to treat infantile hemangiomas highlights the team's innovation. This sub-discipline has established a dermatoscopy-centered platform for fungal, bacterial, viral infection treatments, education, research, and development. Many academic papers have been published in the Journal of the American Academy of Dermatology JAAD and British Journal of Dermatology BJD, with several cover images featured on BJD.

Clinicopathological Study of Skin Tumors: Leading the path in diagnosing skin bullous diseases across Sichuan province through direct immunofluorescence techniques. This sub-discipline also oversees studies on the clinical and molecular biology aspects of skin lymphoproliferative diseases.

Genetic Dermatology: The first report of acrodermatitis enteropathica mutations in patients with SLC39A4, DOCK8 mutations associated with autosomal recessive hyper-IgE syndrome, NIPAL4 mutations causing non-bullous congenital ichthyosiform erythroderma, and DSG1 mutations resulting in non-epidermolytic palmoplantar keratoderma are among the department's notable contributions.

Dermatologic Surgery: This area is recognized for its surgical techniques including over 10,000 surgeries annually, with over 3,000 detl suture procedures, approximately 300 nl operations and more than 150 hr transplant surgeries. The team regularly presents at international forums such as the World Congress of Dermatology, International Society for Dermatologic and Aesthetic Surgery, Chinese Society of Dermatology annual meetings, and China Dermatologist Association conferences.

This department continues to set standards in dermatological education, research, diagnosis, and treatment across numerous disciplines, making significant contributions to both local and national healthcare.
