Department of Dermatology Venerology, West China Hospital, Sichuan University
Established in the early 1950s and boasting over six decades of experience, the Department of Dermatology Venerology is a distinguished center for diagnosing and treating complex skin diseases within Western China. It holds national recognition as a key state-level clinical specialty under construction by the National Health Commission. Notably, this department is one of the most significant bases for medical practice, research, education, and talent development in southwestern China.
Featuring a team of 33 experts including seven senior professionals, seven professors, and seven associate professors, it serves as an active deputy chr organization within both Chinese Dermatologist Venerologist Society and Chinese Medical Doctor Association. Many members occupy vital roles such as vice presidents, committee members, and key contributors in these societies.
Currently, the department boasts four PhDM.D. supervisors and ten master’s tutors. It is structured around six specialized sectors encompassing medical cosmetology, skin-related autoimmune diseases, fungal infectious dermatological diseases, clinicopathological study of skin tumors, genetic skin diseases, and dermatologic surgery. Additionally, a series of disease-focused teams like onychosis team, hr disease team, rare disease group are established.
The department has a proven track record of excellence with its inclusion in the top 10 Dermatology Specialist rankings by Fudan University's Hospital Management Institute for four consecutive years 2015-2018.
Medical Cosmetology Cosmetics: This specialized area conducts substantial research on skin aging and disfiguring diseases' etiology, diagnosis, and assessment. The team leads in the evaluation of cosmetic safety and efficacy and addresses skin issues caused by cosmetics. They established China's first and sole skin biology engineering laboratory and cosmetic engineering technology research center.
Skin-Associated Immune Diseases: This sector focuses on studies concerning allergy, inflammatory skin diseases, psoriasis, autoimmune bullous diseases, and autoimmune connective tissue disorders. Advanced platforms such as flow cytometry, immunofluorescence, real-time fluorescence quantitative PCR, immunoblotting, immunohistochemistry are established.
Fungal Infectious Skin Disease: The department has contributed significantly to the medical field with groundbreaking achievements like treating infantile hemangioma with itraconazole. The establishment of a new evidence-based dermatoscopy-centered platform for diagnosis and treatment of fungal, bacterial and viral infections showcases innovation and advancement in clinical education.
Clinicopathological Study of Skin Tumors: As part of the pathology unit of Chinese Society of Dermatology's vice leadership, this sector conducts direct immunofluorescence diagnostic services across Sichuan province. It not only performs clinicopathological research on skin lymphoproliferative diseases but also engages in molecular biology studies related to its pathogenesis and early diagnosis.
Genetic Skin Diseases: The genodermatosis group pioneers the identification of mutations such as SLC39A4 causing acrodermatitis enteropathica, autosomal recessive hyper-IgE syndrome DOCK8 mutations, NIPAL4 mutation leading to non-bullous congenital ichthyosiform erythroderma and DSG1 mutation resulting in non-epidermolytic palmoplantar keratoderma.
Dermatologic Surgery: Performing over 10,000 surgeries annually including more than 3,000 detl suture techniques, around 300 nl operations, and over 150 hr transplant procedures. The department is renowned for its expertise in detl suture technique, hr transplantation, nl surgery, and nl disease management.
The Department's extensive contributions to dermatology are recognized through various platforms including presentations at international congresses such as the World Congress of Dermatology, International Society for Dermatologic and Aesthetic Surgery, Chinese Society of Dermatology annual meetings, and China Dermatologist Association annual gatherings.
