Rosacea is a chronic skin disorder that primarily affects the facial region. The precise cause remns unknown; however, it often manifests in individuals with certn genetic predispositions and might be triggered by factors like sun exposure, heat, cold, spicy foods, alcohol, or other irritants.
Symptoms typically start as episodic redness across the cheeks, nose, chin, or forehead that may fluctuate over time. As the condition progresses, persistent redness ts to occur alongside small blood vessels becoming visible on the skin surface and the development of tiny bumps or pimples. In some cases, the condition can affect eye health, causing irritation, watery eyes, bloodshot appearance, and discomfort.
There are several manifestations that define different types:
Erythematotelangiectatic - Characterized by flushing, persistent redness, and numerous tiny blood vessels.
Papulopustular - Features persistent redness with occasional blemishes or pimples.
Phymatous - Leads to thickened skin, often resulting in a swelling of the nose from excess tissue accumulation rhinophyma.
Ocular Rosacea - Affects the eyes, causing dryness, tearing, burning sensations, swollen eyelids, and potential vision imprment due to corneal damage.
Visit your healthcare provider if:
The condition significantly impacts your quality of life.
There is extensive involvement across your face or body.
Self-care measures are ineffective in managing symptoms.
Eye symptoms become severe requiring professional intervention.
Milder cases respond well to topical therapies, such as antibiotics metronidazole and clindamycin gels, or vitamin A derivatives like adapalene and tretinoin creamsgels.
For more severe conditions where topicals are insufficient, oral antibiotics like doxycycline or erythromycin may be prescribed to alleviate symptoms. This course might need to be repeated as needed due to frequent flare-ups.
In patients unresponsive to oral antibiotics, isotretinoin can offer effective control of rosacea symptoms. Side effects include dry skin and lips, muscle aches, hr loss, liver function abnormalities, elevated cholesterol, inflammation of muscles, and depression. It is strictly advised for women not to become pregnant during treatment as it may harm the fetus.
For persistent redness or prominent blood vessels, pulsed dye lasers can help reduce their appearance. Carbon dioxide lasers might be used to minimize skin thickness in cases with a swollen nose due to excess tissue rhinophyma.
