Department of Dermatology Venerology
The Department of Dermatology and Venerology at West China Hospital, Sichuan University, was established in the early 1950s with a rich history spanning over six decades. As a regional center for standardized diagnosis and treatment of complex dermatological diseases in western China, it has been recognized as a national clinical key specialty under construction by the National Health Commission. This department is among the most significant bases for medical practice, research, education, and talent development in southwestern China.
With 33 dedicated professionals including seven senior experts, seven professors, and seven associate professors, our team serves as a leading entity within Chinese Dermatologist Venerologist Society of Chinese Medical Doctor Association. Members hold key roles such as vice-chrmen, standing committee members, and leaders across these organizations.
Awards
According to the Hospital Management Institute at Fudan University a renowned Chinese statistical authority, our department has been acknowledged as one of China's top 10 Best Dermatology Specialists for four consecutive years from 2015 to 2018.
Specialties and Teams
Our department is structured into six specialized areas, including medical cosmetology cosmetics, skin-associated immune diseases, fungal and infectious dermatological diseases, clinicopathological study of skin tumors, genetic skin diseases, and dermatologic surgery. We have established disease-centered teams such as the onychosis team, hr disease group, and rare disease team to provide comprehensive care.
Education
Our faculty includes four PhDM.D. supervisors and ten master's supervisors. Through rigorous trning programs, we are committed to nurturing a skilled workforce of nearly 20 Ph.D. or master candidates each year.
Research Highlights
Medical Cosmetology Cosmetics: This sub-specialty has made significant contributions to understanding skin aging and disfigurement diseases' pathogenesis, excelling in cosmetic safety and efficacy evaluation and managing skin disorders caused by cosmetics. The team pioneered the establishment of China's first-ever Skin Biology Engineering Laboratory and Cosmetic Engineering Technology Research Center.
Skin-associated Immune Diseases: Focusing on allergies, inflammatory skin conditions, psoriasis, autoimmune bullous diseases, and autoimmune connective tissue diseases, we have developed cutting-edge platforms for flow cytometry, immunofluorescence, real-time quantitative PCR analysis, immunoblotting, immunohistochemistry, etc.
Fungal and Infectious Skin Disease: We made a global breakthrough by demonstrating that itraconazole is an effective new treatment option for vascular hyperplasia in infants. We have set up an evidence-based dermatoscopy-centered platform for skin disease diagnosis and innovative research on fungal, bacterial, viral infections, contributing several publications to the Journal of the American Academy of Dermatology JAAD and British Journal of Dermatology BJD, including five cover images in BJD.
Clinicopathological Study of Skin Tumors: As a vice leader in the pathology section of the Chinese Society of Dermatology, our team conducts comprehensive direct immunofluorescence diagnosis across Sichuan province for skin bullous diseases. We focus on tumor pathology and molecular biology research on its pathogenesis and early detection.
Genetic Skin Diseases: Involving genodermatosis research, our team reported the first instances of acrodermatitis enteropathica in China due to mutations in SLC39A4 gene. We have also identified cases of autosomal recessive hyper-IgE syndrome carrying DOCK8 mutations and non-bullous congenital erythroderma resulting from NIPAL4 mutation.
Dermatologic Surgery: With an annual caseload over 10,000 surgeries including more than 3,000 detl suture procedures, around 300 nl operations, and a full spectrum of dermatologic treatments, we have a national reputation for excellence in surgical specialties. Our department members regularly present at global forums like the World Congress of Dermatology, International Society for Dermatologic and Aesthetic Surgery, Chinese Society of Dermatology annual meetings, and China Dermatologist Association annual conferences.
